AT A GLANCE

Name: Maurice Zachary Hutch
Sex/Gender: Male, unaware that identifying otherwise is an option
Age: 28
Species: Hooman

General Appearance:
Maurice is a loaf of wonderbread who stands at 5'10" and weighs in at just under three hundred pounds. He has a dumb baby face with a hint of scruff, a beer gut, and terrible bleach blonde hair. It used to be a wild rocker mullet, but now most of it is contained in a ponytail. When short sleeves are an option, you can see his super generic MOM heart tattoo on his upper right shoulder. He wears dark, earth-toned clothes that mostly consist of denim jackets, band t-shirts, and goth crap like spiky wrist bands and big black boots. He's a sucker for the 80's and sometimes he wears shirts he's had since he was young that are stretched and faded. Has been spotted wearing headbands and coloring his nails with sharpie.

Special Delivery

History:

This slice of soggy Wonderbread was born and raised by both his parents in Tworock Texas during the 80s. His father primarily did farm work and machine maintenance. His mother was a truck driver until she quit due to family things when Maurice was around fifteen. Maurice grew up the youngest out of his two brothers and sister. Being the baby entitled him to being spoiled and sheltered to a certain extent but he was also mercilessly cowed by his sister (and her friends) to the point of being somewhat afraid of girls in general. Maurice spent much of his childhood trailing after and seeking approval from his brothers. After his sister made their oldschool Baptist mother flip her lid by coming home pregnant at seventeen, things in the house changed. His mother became nigh tyrannical and cracked down on any signs of what could upset her idea of the perfect southern family image even more.

As a result, Maurice was yanked out of a budding interest in theater and shoved into football. He was forbidden from anything 'unmanly' and soon became a recluse that glued himself to comic books and television. He still watched Jem and the Holograms when nobody was home. From middle school until the end of his sophomore year, he was a bully and skulked the hallways with knuckles at the ready to take out anyone smaller than him. He focused on the band and drama kids in particular out of jealousy. While at home he wore a facade of 'good ole boy' and always went to church with his family. He even played guitar during service. One day he picked on the wrong kid and got his ass kicked. When his mother found out what he had done, the two of them entered a physical knock-down drag-out that ended in a bloody and tearful tie. After she saw the damage she had done (and would be unable to reverse no matter how she tried) she changed her tune and mellowed out. Maurice's damage was done. He became a complete introvert and hardly spoke a word to his peers in his senior year. None of the kids at school could figure out what had happened to the reigning bully.

Once out of highschool, Maurice went to a small college nearby to learn vehicle repair. Here, he had the opportunity to start over, but made little use of his clean slate. Maurice didn't make any social ties outside of class and dorm acquaintances. He attended any gathering where there were free drinks. He had drank off and on as a teenager to get attention, but in college he used it as a coping method to deal with family stresses, self-imposed loneliness and guilt. This turned into a full blown addiction. Maurice was not a social drinker. It wasn't hard to find him in the corner of some bar just off campus or leaning against a wall at parties. 90% of the time, he never had pocket money due to spending it all on beer and hair products. Styling his hair became a form of self therapy but it never took the place of alcohol.

After three years, he left college and moved several hours away to a nowhere town called Dogtrot. This put some distance between himself and his family and allowed him some breathing room. Though his alcoholism never went away (it actually evolved into abuse of over-the-counter drugs), he began to open up around the mechanic he was shadowing under. He became widely known as a 'good ole boy' among the older crowd and was pretty happy living as a cog in the machine. This went on for about two years until Maurice was fired when his boss learned he was living in his truck after being evicted from the trailer he was renting for not paying on time for several months in a row. The elderly mechanic feared for Maurice and demanded he get help.

Instead, Maurice drove home, fessed up to both parents about what had been going on for the past few years (his mother kept quite a few of Maurice's misadventures from his father because his father is super high strung and it would have done a number on his health) and temporarily moved back home. He attended maybe two AA meetings total before striking out even further from home. Several states away, Maurice found himself a tiny apartment in sunny Florida and started work as a UPS delivery man. The long drives helped keep him out of bars (for the most part) and the solitude allowed him to listen to his music and scream along with it to get out any pent up aggression left over from his bully days.

Personality:

I would just link to the okay.jpg guy but I don't think that would cut it.

Maurice is just a big kid. It's not hard to make him laugh. He's easily entertained by the fantastic and mundane alike. Seriously, give him a nerf gun and he will entertain himself for an hour. Hokey B movies, comic books, and old video games all hold his attention in a vice grip. He can even be heard uttering 'Gozer' under his breath as a really lame adopted swear from the Ghostbusters movie. However this isn't because of an 'it's old so it's better' mentality. He's just BROKE and that is all he has. Maurice daydreams constantly and hums showtunes to himself when alone.

Maurice is incredibly cagey about his interests outside his 'dorky guy stuff'. He loves music and is a musician himself, but his true love is the stage. He gets all starry-eyed when he watches plays and listens to musicals and daydreams about being on stage himself. He also fusses over his hair a lot and loves to talk about hair in general. Once in a while, Maurice finds himself wondering if life would have turned out different for him had he been born a girl. It seems he'd be quite a bit happier and that worries him. After his parents did everything they could to pound out a perfect football lovin', rough and tumble boy and keep him away from 'sissy stuff' to further save their family's image, he isn't sure what they'd think of him if they knew that. Maurice feels ashamed when he likes anything outside of what has been presented to him as acceptable for men to enjoy. He has been taught that otherwise is 'weak' but gets confused because his mother is the strongest figure he's ever known. Maurice wishes he could be more like her. He's very sheltered and doesn't know there's a whole spectrum of genders and sexualities.

The boy has a LOT to figure out. Alien attack adventures will help him with that. Taking on different morphs with genders different than his own will allow him to gain perspective and even show him that 'ITS REALLY OKAY' one day.

He's easily persuaded with bullying and pleading alike and aches to please and be accepted by those around him. He will go as far as chameleoning his body language and speech patterns to better fit in with any group of people he's trying to impress regardless of age or sex. He will go from spinning intricate webs of profanity to greeting others with 'hey gurlfrand'. He's spent most of his life being dominated and directed by other people. He's not good at thinking on his own (or so he's been led to believe) but is an incredibly sweet and thoughtful person. Maurice is the guy who will show up at seven am with hotdogs and help you move. Thing is, if you have any beer in your fridge or spare change in your sofa, you won't anymore.

His addiction has gotten him in trouble time and time again and for now, he has been unable to shake it. Maurice drowns his sorrows and anxieties in alcohol of any type and often can't make it through the day without one or two. Please, please don't give Maurice money and expect him to do what you told him to do with it. When money is tight (which is almost always) Maurice will resort to drinking cough syrup and anything else he can get ahold of. He is not picky and often stops caring about his personal well-being. He occasionally entertains suicidal thoughts but they aren't as prevalent now as they were when he was under the watchful eye of his mother. Maurice feels like he's failed his family by not being a technician like his brother or having a family like his sister or even holding a job for more than a couple years at a time. He knows he has a problem and his self worth issues keep him from doing anything about it.

Shyness is a big thing with Maurice. Maurice is a skittish individual and is great at freaking himself out. Loud noises make him jump. Unfamiliar noises send his imagination into over-dive. And it's not even that good of an imagination. He's timid around strangers and horrible at eye-contact. He drifts towards the edge of groups and ducks out of sight. Like a fat deer. Though comfortable around people older than he is (he's used to getting pats on the head for being a 'good ole boy') it's rare for him to start conversations with people his own age. He feels alienated by them because he doesn't have a cellphone or a computer. He can't afford to go see the new movies or buy things like a Play Station. He's very much stuck in the 80's with his 'dude' slang, bad haircut, and the like. When he does speak it's a toss up between him mumbling a few stray words to the floor or overflowing with awkward babbling. He hasn't been socialized enough to find that happy medium.

Conflict within a circle of friends tears him to pieces. He'll have a horrible time trying to find a side to be on and end up bailing out of fear of making one end of the argument angry with him for associating with the other. He doesn't like the idea of somebody being angry with him and will usually roll belly-up in attempts to fix whatever he's done even if he isn't sure what that is. He's prone to bouts of, “I'm sorry, I'm sorry!” and lots of awkward fretting and hovering until whoever he's offended is like IT'S OKAY, MAURICE, JESUS, JUST QUIT IT.

As much of a marshmallow as he can be, Maurice was still a school bully once upon a time and that animal in him is not dead—-just buried. He knows he's bigger and heavier and stronger than a lot of the people he meets. If pushed and prodded enough, he can actually pass straight through being a wibbling lump of apologies and break a man's jaw and then keep yanking on it to see just how broken it can get. He gets his temper from his mother. He's a slow boil, but once the steam starts, it's near impossible to simmer down until he's wore himself out. Surprisingly, this rarely every happens when he's intoxicated. Maurice is a sleepy drunk more often than not. He's more prone to doing stupid 'hold my beer and watch this' stunts than starting fights.

So we have a shy, well-meaning good old boy of an alcoholic in a little nowhere job. AND THEN ALIENS. Maurice will be pretty justifiably terrified when he learns about it and is initiated. It gives him so much to think about and wonder about. Why him? He's no good for anything! However, after gaining morphing powers and seeing that he can be useful and even feel empowered, Maurice will latch onto it. It will become his chance to be somebody. To do good. To not suck.

FOR EARTH!

Abilities & Limitations:

List any useful skills or particular areas of expertise that your character might have, as well as any weaknesses or limitations, whether mental or physical. In other words, how is your character capable, and how is your character vulnerable?

+HIGH POINTS+
+ Loyal- Though he messes up sometimes, Maurice will fight to the end to come through for his friends.
+ Good Listener- Maurice knows when to shut his mouth. He's got room for everyone on his shoulder.
+ Physically Strong- He used to carry heavy car parts every day and now he carts around huge boxes. He can give you a leg up no problem.
+ Fake It Till You Make It- Though he hasn't had much drama training, Maurice is a pretty convincing actor when he puts his mind to it.
+ Music- Maurice is an acceptable singer but a very good acoustic guitar player.
+ Order Up- Maurice is a pretty good cook. His spaghetti is better than your mom's. No really.
+ Babysitter- He's very good with kids since he's still very much a big kid himself.
+ Cooks better spaghetti than your grandma. I'm serious.
+ Cowboy- Maurice has no problem 'roughing it' and doing without.
+ Numbers Guy- He sucks at history (and learning from it) but he's pretty damn good at math.

+LOW POINTS+
- Addiction- Maurice his addicted to alcohol and some over-the-counter medicines. It's very hard for him to choose being responsible over getting his fix and he often fails. He gets cranky and hard to deal with when going through withdrawal. Might also sell your TV if you aren't looking.
- The Spiral- Maurice is often overwhelmed by feelings of hopelessness and it can be hard to break him out of the cycle one he's gotten started.
- Ignorance Isn't Bliss- Maurice is incredibly sheltered. He doesn't have a computer or cable and the only phone he has is a cheap fifteen dollar one. He's unaware of several big issues in the world and can sometimes say hurtful things because of this. He's learning that he IS ignorant and it causes him anxiety and makes him second guess himself constantly.
- Weak Willed- Maurice depends on praise and responds poorly to peer pressure.
- That mullet. Just...no, Maurice. Put that away. The 80's are gone and you missed them.

AU Explanation: Maurice is an OC that I'm attempting to write books about. In this game, everything up until the point the VAMPIRE SHENANIGANS were going to happen in his canon will remain the same. Instead, it...just won't happen and Maurice's life will continue as per usual for about two or three more years. THEN ALIEN SHENANIGANS happen instead.

Character Relations: Maurice's mother worries about him a lot because of his alcoholism and he's started slipping up on the job. She's terrified he'll get fired, have a wreck or get himself arrested. I'll play her if she decides to tromp down to Florida and jerk her son up by the ears if need be. She will show up in phone calls.

Also the UPS company because eventually he won't be able to keep his job. They're missing a van and an employee. Hmm.

The Invasion: Maurice was making a sign-upon-arrival delivery one day and wound up witnessing something he wasn't supposed to. W h u p s. Nobody in his life is resistance-related. All of his family is in Texas and the UPS branch he works for has no current yeerk employees. He lives alone in a tiny apartment on the upper floor of a complex the next town over.

RP Sample:

"Cuz there's thuuunder in your heart! Every move is like lightning!" Maurice sang with the radio as he guided the delivery truck down a long and curving paved driveway. Life in Florida had been pretty quiet for the past few months. It was a different quiet than Dogtrot. Palm trees leaned overhead and stretched long shadows across the brown van. When he reached the gate, Maurice leaned out the window and whistled through the gap in his teeth.

It was a mansion. A real live mansion with initials twisted into the iron gate, albino peacocks wandering the yard, buzzing cameras that tracked his approach, and everything! For some reason, Maurice thought they only existed on television. He hopped out of the van and carried a thin, book-shaped package up tot he gates and peered through. A few of the peacocks looked back at him. He tried to push the doors open but they were locked tight. He hummed to himself and looked around.

"Aha!" Just like in the movies, on the right side of the gate was a speaker panel with some buttons set into the wall just below a particularly ugly gargoyle. Maurice approached and pushed the first button because it seemed as good as any. "UPS delivery!"

He waited. He waited and shifted his weight from one foot to the other and hummed along with the music still blaring from the rumbling van behind him. Maybe they didn't hear him. He mashed the button a second time.

"H'looo? It's the Uups man!" Nothing. He tried the other two buttons and nothing happened. "Man..."

Maurice glanced skyward. The sky was a beautiful, Florida blue and the few clouds that were stretched across it were white. No rain was going to fall today. Therefor, Maurice shoved the package into the gargoyle's mouth and drove away.

Mission complete.
